What happens during your first therapy session?

There are a host of reasons that someone decides to see a therapist; common mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, issues in a relationship or family, or even being ordered by a court. Often, the thought of going into a session is overwhelming. Sometimes people don’t know exactly what to expect, especially in a first session. Here are some common questions that clients ask about the first therapy session.

-What should I expect when I walk into my first appointment?

Typical appointments last from 45 minutes to an hour. The first few sessions are about gathering information about you, the client. Usually, therapists have you fill out forms before your first session, some of which ask about your reasons for seeking therapy. This helps the therapist have some knowledge about what may be brought up in the session. Sometimes, if all the paperwork hasn’t been filled out by the client, the therapist may help the client complete it in the session. Therapists may gather information about your physical health, past and present mental health concerns, or your general background. After going over paperwork and confidentiality policies, therapists may ask about situations or feelings that made you want to see them.

-What kinds of questions might my therapist ask?

“What made you want to find a counselor?” “Was there something that made you want to see me specifically?” “Have you tried to harm yourself in the past?” “Have you been diagnosed with any physical or mental health problems?” “Are there/have there been any big stressors in your life?” “How long have you had these problems, and what made you want to seek help now?” “How are these problems affecting your daily life/work/relationships?” “Do you take medication for your mental health?” “Have you had counseling in the past? If so, what has/hasn’t worked for you?” “

-Do I have to talk about difficult experiences immediately?

Therapists will take things at your pace. You don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to. However, the more you share with your therapist, the more they will be able to help.

-What if I cry, get nervous, or don't know what to say?

It is completely normal to have a wide range of emotions in a therapy appointment.

-How do I know whether my therapist is a good fit?

When you feel you can be completely open and honest with your therapist. When you feel safe enough to talk about hard topics. When you feel that your sessions will be kept confidential. When you feel like your therapist is listening to you. If you feel like your therapist can understand you. When you feel emotionally safe. When the space feels judgment-free.
